Officers clamp down on the use of illegal e-bikes across Manchester City Centre in dedicated operation with Immigration Enforcement 

Following reports from members of the public concerned for their safety while out and about in congested and heavily pedestrianised areas, our Roads Policing Unit has been working with our Force Intelligence Bureau on monitoring e-bike usage, to ensure compliance with Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) laws, as part of a national project led by the NPCC.

This operation stepped up enforcement efforts, with officers stopping 45 e-bike riders and seizing 19 non-compliant e-bikes on Sunday (28/09/25), demonstrating our commitment to protecting pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Officers issued six traffic offence reports, eight summonses and two arrests.

This operation was run in conjunction with Home Office Immigration Enforcement and the local Neighbourhood Policing teams, following the government’s announcement of tougher laws to crack down on illegal working and those abusing the gig economy, where workers are paid for freelance work or short-term contracts as opposed to permanent jobs.
